It took Cher a long time to find the ideal Malibu location, which she eventually bought in 1998 after repeatedly driving by it. The ideal mansion was subsequently created in the enchanted setting high above the Pacific Ocean, a process that took over five years (and a little help from Martyn Lawrence Bullard).
Cher’s Malibu home is a reflection of her lifelong interest in architecture and design. She brought hundreds of tear sheets ripped from magazines to the drawing board. The home’s design makes reference to Venetian palazzos, great Renaissance villas of Europe, and Moorish influences.
The remarkable 16,000 square foot estate was built under the direction of Wallace Tutt III and is situated to take in the expanse from Point Dume to Santa Monica along the coast and out to Catalina Island. The big picture windows provide breathtaking views from sunrise to dusk.
The best materials were used, including marble and limestone from France and Italy, hand-forged bronze doors, and Moroccan and Spanish tiles and handmade hardware. A Venetian marble balustrade from the 18th century was bought from William Randolph Hearst’s collection in San Simeon.
Martyn Lawrence Bullard was given the opportunity to help Cher redecorate her Beverly Hills home 16 years ago. Working hand-in-hand, he reworked all the finishes with her signature style of opulent comfort, theatrical elegance, and a timeless color palette. Talented craftspeople created the beautiful Moroccan lighting that warms the house, hand-distressed mirrors to create walls of mirrored wonder, and painted the ceilings with Eastern themes. Cher had traditional henna designs applied to her hands during an Indian wedding she attended, and these motifs were stenciled onto the raw silk walls and draperies of the bedroom using a mixture of tea leaves, coffee grinds, and umber paint pigments. The private sitting area’s hand-carved Moroccan Mashrabiya wood panels were made in Fez, Morocco.
From the living room, the prospect seems to flow seamlessly across the pool—its infinity edge appears to lap against the windows—out into the Pacific Ocean. The entertaining rooms are flooded with light and designed to allow the breathtaking views through the windows to be the stars of the space.
A mansion of this size could not be constructed now due to the strict regulations that Malibu has implemented over the years. After 20 years, Cher is now prepared to establish a new sanctuary.
